Toby and Molly were different types of dogs in all areas, don’t get me wrong we loved them both the same but there were times when we wished that Toby would settle down just a little bit. Molly was quiet and loving, she loved to be cuddled and stroked, where as Toby could only sit still for about five Minutes. Our flat constantly looked like we had been burgled, we had carpet missing, chunks missing from our furniture, no paint left on the walls, and teeth marks in all of the cupboards thanks to Toby. We had been through three remote controls for theTV and two bed duvets so far, we tried everything to stop him but each time we left him alone we dreaded coming home to the mess he would have made, we left toys out for him, the telly on and even the radio on but nothing seemed to help, only by staying home from work all day with him would help.

Now one day we had just bought a bottle of wine and a box of chocolates for our friends birthday, I wrapped it up then went to write on the card, realising that we had forgotten to buy it I asked Brian if he would like to walk around to the shop with me, Toby and Molly had both been out for a long walk so we decided to leave them both asleep. We were gone for fifteen minutes maximum and assuming that they were still fast asleep and our flat would still be intact we walked in through the door, “God what’s that smell,” Brian asked, there on the floor in the kitchen was a big wet patch with broken glass all over the floor, “oh my god,” I said, he must have got up on the side and knocked off the present but what we could not understand was where was the rest of the wine, giggling I said to Brian “do you think he has drank it,” he called Toby over and took a big sniff, “yes” he said, “that and all the chocolates, even the box, oh boy is he going to be poorly later.” About half a hour later Toby went to get up but was very unsure of how to stand, “oh my god,” Brian said, “look! Toby is drunk,” and sure enough he took two steps, wobbled and then fell over, boy oh boy did we laugh.

The down side was that Toby had us up all night, he was really very poorly all through the night and when he did go to sleep he snored so loudly that it kept us both awake, luckily by the morning he seemed to be feeling much better though by looking at the rest of us we looked like death warmed up from the lack of sleep, even Molly looked tired bless her, and yes in no time at all Toby was chasing the cat’s around the living room, barking and barking when he nearly caught them, so much for his hang over I thought, and I was trying to pull the duvet up over my head as all three of them came running into the bedroom and jumped straight up on the bed and started to play fight, Brian and I looked at each other, both of us knowing what the other was thinking, thank god we have two very different types of dogs.

Having two different types of dogs and cats in a two bedroom flat meant that there was never a lot of room, and with Christmas just round the corner. So we decided to have a clear out and make room for the Christmas tree and all the decorations. One weekend later we were finished, Christmas tree up, lights and chocolates on, Toby and Molly took no interest in the tree what so ever which we were very surprised at, however Jasper and Tango were being little devils getting the baubles off the tree and playing with them. After standing on and breaking over half of them we took the rest of them off and gave up on the idea of baubles. Monday morning came round far too quickly, back to work, great, but just before we left we put Jasper and Tango out for the day, not wanting to come home to find the tree dismantled from where they had jumped on it.

For me Monday has always been the quickest day of the week to pass and before we knew it we were on our way home for lunch and to walk the dogs. Walking into the flat Toby did not come to great us like usual, we found this very strange as he was always waiting by the door and as soon as you opened it he would rush passed us and be gone. Walking into the front room we realised why, the tree was on the floor, parts of the branches were scattered round the furniture, there was plastic and glass every where from the lights, but funnily enough there was absolutely no trace what so ever of any chocolate any where, Toby looked up from the settee and then over to where the tree should have been as if to say it was not me, I did not do it, but still having the wire from the lights still attached to his mouth, we found that very hard to believe. I went over and pulled him off the settee onto the floor and shouting at him, at the same time I was completely gutted that he had ruined our tree and all our hard work, not having enough time to clean it all up we shut him out in the kitchen and went back to work knowing we had to come back later to clean it all up.

I stayed angry at Toby for days and he knew that he had done wrong and once we had been out and bought another Christmas tree he never touched it again, we never put chocolates on it again either, I think we had all learnt a valuable lesson on this one, but at least we all had a lovely Christmas with our pets, especially with our two different types of dogs.

Dad called later that night and said that having Toby again tomorrow was to much for him, two different types of dogs running around was enough, we had seen this coming so the next day we left Toby at home while Molly went up to my parents, it was still early days but she seemed to be getting stronger and stronger with each passing hour, we let dad have Molly for the next week and then we kept her home This cheered up Toby because every morning when we left he howled and howled, not understanding that because he was naughty he had to stay behind. The damage we came home to every day was unbelievable, Brian got angry with him which did not help Toby or myself because I stuck up for Toby which then caused arguments where he would not speak for hours, which if I am honest was quite appreciated.

Now one rare Friday night I was home alone, well saying that I was led on the settee with Molly, Tango and jasper, they all led on me somehow, tv on, can of beer and a nice bar of chocolate, ah bliss, I was in heaven, when all of a sudden the door burst open and in came Brian and Toby, both of them acting as if they had seen a miracle, “guess what, Guess what” Brian said, “Toby has got his first certificate in dog training,” “how much did that cost you” I asked, my comment going straight passed him as a piece of paper was shoved into my face, “look, look, he has passed the first course, how clever is that?” “It’s great” I replied, “it’s just that all the other dogs in his class passed that test three months ago.” Brian sat down on the chair, “I don’t think you know how hard it is for Toby to stay on track and now he is getting better you are knocking him,” “sorry,” I said, “why don’t you show me what he can do, as long as you turn the TV off so he does not get distracted by any other sounds,” so turning off the TV, Tango, Jasper Molly and myself sat on the edge of our seats watching and waiting for Toby to show us what he could do.

“This is what he got his certificate for,” Brian said “sit, stay and fetchand fair play to Toby he did everything right first time except the fetch, when Brian threw the ball Toby chased it then sat down and started to play with it and when Brian called him Toby looked at him as if to say, if you wanted it to play with then why throw it away in the first place, getting up he ran into the bedroom to hide the ball, “at this rate Toby will meet loads of different types of dogs at his classes,” Brian said, at this we both burst out laughing at the thought that Toby will be going to puppy training all his life.

The morning seemed to take forever to come around but as soon as we were able we were on the phone to the vets, you could hear all the different types of dogs barking in the background, it was a strain on my ears, I tried to pick out Molly’s bark while the reception put me through, eventually I heard his voice, panic began rising in me straight away fearing the worse, but he was very calm telling me that she had a comfortable night and that she was stable but not yet ready to come home and if we wanted to we were allowed to go and see her, we got straight into the car and made our way to the vets, neither one of us saying anything just praying. We were taken down to the recovery room to see her, it was all she could do to lift her head when we walked in, she looked very poorly. For the next two days we went in to see her and each time we saw a improvement, on the third day we were allowed to bring her home as long as someone was there with her for the next forty eight hours. Toby knew that Molly was poorly, he was very quiet around her and just cuddled up to her when she let him and staying away when she didn’t.

Dad phoned later that day to ask how she was, we told him everything and saying that one of us would stay off work to look after her, “I am home all day looking after your mother,” he said, “bring both dogs up here I will look after them,” “what both of them,” I said, “do I have to repeat everything I say,” he replied, thanking him very much I said goodbye and put the phone down. Brian could not believe it either and we came to the conclusion that he must have been drinking to offer to have Toby, especially after the last time. We dropped both dogs of the next day and went off to work, we dreaded it every time the phone rang in case it was my dad but the day passed without any interruptions, but before we went to pick them up we stopped off and got a peace offering, a bottle of cider, my dads favourite, maybe he would have them again tomorrow.

We walked in and there curled up on the chair behind my dad was molly, Pep, my dads dog was led down in front of the fire but there was no sign of Toby, what a surprise (not), “where is he,” I asked dad, “the little sod ran off again, he is up in the field running around and he won’t come when I call him.” Brian went to get him back and five minutes later they both appeared at the door,Toby looking well pleased with himself for being outside most of the day, and then he ran over to my dad, jumping on his lap and licking his face as if to say where have you been, I have been looking all around the field for you, at this we all started to laugh, even my dad. We thought that now would be a good time to leave. We thanked my dad and headed home with our two very different types of dogs, ready to do it all over again tomorrow.

Veterinary Secrets

Our two different types of dogs were getting on really well with each other, Molly was always looking out for Toby and when he got too much for her she would give him a quick nip to tell him off, which at first made him go of in a sulk but it was never for very long, then he was back annoying her again. Bed time always made us laugh, they would get up and go and sit by the bedroom door looking from us, then to the door and then back to us, it was like they were our parents telling us that it was our bed time. If we did not move they would come over and sit on our laps, Toby just staring at you and molly would put her paws either side of your head with her nose touching your nose, so most of the time we just gave in and went to bed, at least we had a tv that we could watch in there. So this night was no different to any other, or so we thought.

We were woken up to the sound of Molly yelping and Toby barking. Turning on the light we could see that there was something wrong with Molly, she was lying down behind me on my pillow trying to stand up but falling back down again and again, Toby had his nose under her tummy trying to lift her up but she was in so much pain she could not do it, as usual I am no help at all and stared to cry, Brian sent me and Toby out of the room, I had to drag Toby off the bed and carry him into the front room, he was as upset as me, great, we were a helpful pair, not. Brian came out and got straight on the phone to the vets who told us to take her in, easier said than done, Molly yelped in pain when we lifted her and Toby was going mad running round our feet trying to jump up to get to molly, so to make things easier we all went to the vets including Toby. As we arrived the vet was already waiting for us by the door and took Molly from Brian and carried her in to do some tests straight away. I stood their shaking from head to toe, too frightened to go in and not wanting to hear what the vet had to say. About twenty minutes later he was back and by the look on his face it was not good news.

He had given her an injection for the pain and now she was sleeping, he wanted to keep her in for twenty four hours to do some more tests and said not to hold out much hope, he thought that it was her heart giving up, probably why her owners had probably got rid of her knowing that if she was to have had another litter it would have probably killed her. Running out into the cold air I sat on the steps with Toby, sobbing uncontrollably until Brian came out and walked me over to the car, he had told the vet to do all they could for Molly no matter what the cost but not to have her suffer any pain and that we would phone first thing in the morning. Later on as we were sat in bed with Toby in the middle of us, we prayed and prayed that she would make it through the night and that she would get better, our family would not be the same without our two different types of dogs running around.

All our friends said that it helped many different types of dogs if you had them neutered, I was willing to give any thing a go because if anything Toby’s behaviour was getting a lot worse, he was also very boisterous with loads of energy and he never seemed to be quiet for longer than a minute, running around like a headless chicken jumping from one piece of furniture to the next, so hoping that this would work we made the appointment for him at the vets. When we arrived Toby was so excited he could not sit or would not sit, you know Toby, and when the vet came out and called his name he pulled me right off the seat and ran straight over to him like he was a long lost friend, this I knew would soon change, we signed the forms and then he talked us through the procedure, he told us all about how to look after him when he came back, no problem I thought, leaving Toby with his new friend we left, Toby did not even know that we had gone, what a traitor I thought, as long as he was getting fussed he did not care whether we were there or not.

The vet told me to phone about 3pm to see if everything had gone OK and tell us what time we could go and pick him up. They told us that as soon as he woke he had done nothing but bark, so as soon as we could we were to collect him, great, I thought, even they were fed up with him. Walking through the door we heard him barking straight away and the reception rang down to have him brought up, you would never have believed that he had just been neutered, he was jumping up at everyone that he came close enough to. The vet took us into the room and said to us,  “watch him and keep him quiet,” “easier said than done” I said to Brian as Toby jumped off the table and ran out the door taking Brian with him, you could here Brian saying “yeah this has really quietened him down” and the vet reassuring me that in time he would, as I followed them out I prayed that it would.

Opening the car door back at home Toby realised that nobody had hold of the lead and with that he was gone, “Toby, Toby” Brian yelled chasing after him but he was gone, so much for keeping him quiet then, I thought and headed of in the same direction, eventually I caught up with Brian who had by now caught Toby and was giving him a stern telling off which as usual Toby was oblivious to, seeing me approach he got all excited and started to pull again on the lead, but this time Brian was ready for him and pulled him back under control, “oh my god,” I said look at all the blood, Brian picked Toby up and carried him home, I got on the phone straight away to the vets, they said that he had probably pulled his stitches out and to take him back in, which we did straight away. Later that night Toby was very quiet, thank god, maybe like all the other different types of dogs this would actually work and quieten him down, only time would tell.

We were invited to go and watch our friends team chasing at the weekend, there were so many different types of dogs, some tied up whilst others were running round loose with their owners running round shouting their names, I said to Brian “Toby will be in his element here with all these dogs,” Brian looked from me to Toby saying “lets hope he does not show us up today, we deserve a day off,” laughing we went to find our friends with Toby and Molly in tow.

We decided to all walk the horses course so we could find a good place to video our friends team, half way round we were on our own so decided to let the dogs off their leads, Molly only ran a little way of whilst Toby and our friends dogs ran round all over the place chasing each other the whole time, “lets hope they blow of some steam” our friends said, just then we heard the whistle and knew that a team of horses were on the course heading our way, our friend Chris whistled to her two dogs and they ran over to us with Toby following, this was good, I thought, bending down to grab him just as the team came round the corner, Toby’s ears pricked up and he was gone, “oh no,” I said and yelling his name, “he thinks that it’s Jess and Merlin, please Toby please come back,” but he was all ready barking and jumping up at the second horse in the team, the man started to shout at Toby whilst at the same time trying to control his horse but it was too late, the horse was spooked and refused the jump, fair play to the rider he cleared it easy all on his own without his horse. We all started to run over, Brian gabbing Toby shouting at him while putting him on the lead, the rest of us trying to catch the loose horse which was easier said than done, eventually having caught the horse we went over to the rider, he was not happy, not happy at all and who could blame him, he went right off yelling and swearing at us all, we apologised over and over again but he was not listening, so we started to make our way back not wanting this to get out of hand anymore than it already was.

By the time we were nearly back at the horse box I was in tears, I felt so sorry for that team because of Toby, they would probably not even get placed now, looking down I realised that Molly was missing, great, could my day get any worse, panicking we retraced our steps till we came to a big muddy patch stretching from one side of the field to the other, and there she was just sitting, not wanting to get her paws wet crossing through it, picking her up we made our way back again and still upset from earlier, as soon as we had finished doing the videoing we left for home. Seeing all the different types of dogs today doing what they were told I vowed to do more training with Toby from now on, he would learn, trust me, he will learn.

After Molly’s nasty experience we were very careful around different types of dogs, especially the ones that we did not know, whether it was because Toby had protected Molly that day we did not know but the difference in both dogs was very noticeable, especially when we introduced Molly, to our horses Merlin and Jester. Molly followed Toby as he headed full belt into the field, heading straight towards Jess barking and snapping at his heels but both of the horses had the devil in them today we were sure of it.

Jess started to rear up hitting out with his front hooves, Toby very quickly moved out of the way but as he did so he ran backwards into Merlin who kicked out just hitting Molly, Molly yelped and then froze right in the middle of the two horses. Toby realising that she was not going to move started to bark at them both and then run away coming back every so often to bark again, they soon cottoned on and started to chase him, with this going on Brian and I both ran over to get Molly, neither one of us realized that the gate was still wide open, by now Toby was chasing Jess madly around the field, Jess saw the gate wide open and headed straight through it into the road with Toby close on his hooves.

Luckily it was not a main road but still it was a road, I ran out calling to Toby and telling him to sit and stay but he was having so much fun he did not hear me, Brian ran over and gave me Molly and then started to head up the road, but in that next instance we saw the funniest thing ever, Toby was coming back down the road glancing over his shoulder as he did, and behind him head down and very close was Jess, the sight of this was so funny it was almost unbelievable, Toby ran past us both and jumped straight into the back of the Land-Rover with Jess skidding to a halt stopping just in time before he hit the vehicle, we caught Jess and put him back in with Merlin, only then did Toby come back out.

We took Molly to the vets who checked her over and said she was fine, just a bit shook up, which was understandable after what she had been through, but at least she was OK we took her home and Toby and Molly led down quietly for the rest of the night, even though they are different types of dogs you could tell that they loved each other very much.
